Herndon DeMolay to Participate in Dulles Days Plane Pull -
7.29.08
Saturday, September 6, 2008 Dulles International Airport A benefit for Special Olympics Virginia, the pull is a fun team competition to see which group can pull a 150,000+ pound cargo jet the fastest. Teams are made up of 20 members, who all line up adjacent to a huge rope attached to the aircraft. The starter signals when to start and starts the stopwatch. After the team pulls the aircraft 12 feet, the stopwatch stops and the elapsed time is recorded as the team score.
A plane pull team is made up of 20 people; the team must raise a minimum of $1000 through fundraisers, pledges, and / or company sponsorship (that’s at least $50 per team member) Each team member receives a customized team t-shirt with their team name or company logo printed on the back (registration deadline for custom shirts is August 15, 2008) Teams receive a plaque and have a team photo taken at the event. Teams listed on the event website and receive recognition in promotional material.
The members of Herndon Chapter have decided to participate in event and it should offer the trifecta of fun, charity, and promotion. Wavier forms are included in with the newsletter. The first 20 members to submit their wavier forms get to go. This event is open to prospects as well if they are of DeMolay quality and character. We are actively seeking donation and will be registered with the event by Aug 15th. For addition questions please contact Dad Westerman or see the Plane pull website at http://www.planepull.com/
The Challenge Has Been Issued - 7.29.08
Masonic Paintball Challenge August 2nd At the July 24th called meeting Members of Herndon Lodge 264 attended to issue a challenge. This challenge was issued by Dad Dick Walk with oxygen tank in tow state the following: “The summer will soon be nearing its end. School will again become your primary focus and many of you will be off to pursue further lessons at institutions of higher education. These pursuits will all teach you valuable lessons. However; before you depart, your fathers, grandfathers and older brethren in Masonry have one more valuable lesson to impart upon you…. On the paintball field. Therefore, we the brethren of Herndon Lodge 264 (and associates) do hereby issue the following proclamation: Hear ye, hear ye. We the brethren of Herndon Lodge do hereby challenge the brethren of Herndon DeMolay to meet us on the field of honor (AG Paintball outside Leesburg) at 9:30 AM on August 2nd. Whereupon the DeMolay will surely receive full and proper instruction.
We trust that the young gentlemen of Herndon DeMolay have the intestinal fortitude and strength of character to defend the honor of the chapter and accept this solemn challenge. However, should this challenge be too stern a task, should you find your feeble wills incapable of raising to meet your older, more skilled and more knowledgeable brethren on the field of honor, then we'll offer to stomp your butts in something tamer, (like badminton). {throws a glove on the floor} Are you ready to rummmmmmmble!?”
The gauntlet was accepted by Kenny Tamres and the battle will ensue this Saturday.

Operation Chisel - 7.29.08
Operation Chisel is a concept from the brainchild of Master Councilor Gillenwater and Dad Westerman. In an effort to promote better physicality of the membership of the Chapter over the duration of the next several months Operation Chisel will present a gambit of events. These events are meant to promote mental toughness as well as physical strength and to make your XBOX 360 lonely (yeah I said it, callus thumbs!) You want to get a better idea watch the opening scene to Patton. For our first event here’s the break- down. Obstacles: 150,000+ pounds of stubborn,
12 feet of hell Resources: 20 teammates ,
Brute Force and Ignorance

2008 Conclave Review - 7.29.08
On the night before Conclave several members attended the 12:01 opening night showing The Dark Knight. We had a solid turnout of guys for Bryce’s exit from office Conclave. Blake, Hassan, Will, Robert, Ben, Steve, Louie, Jeff, Bryce, Treigh, Lucas, Dillon.
Dads Ivy, Westerman, Cord and Pendelton rounded out the advisors, PSMC Nickens joined us for the banquet.
Blake, Hassan, Will, Robert, Ben, Steve, Louie, Jeff, Bryce, Treigh, Lucas, Dillon. Dads Ivy, Westerman, Cord and Pendelton rounded out the advisors PSMC Nickens joined us for the banquet. Brother Treigh became proficient in order to help the Chapter with its Conclave activities.
The first item of business was playing AW for the Region Title game in Softball. The game started with some confusing. The guys from AW looked like get shut out, but a balooped single down the 1st base line brought in their first run. Louie channeling his inner Fred Magriff dove and hurt himself. Blake stayed in communication via txt message as the brothers Gillenwater were on there way. We won soundly 16-3.
When the sports comps began we saw that we would be meeting Westhampton in all of the semi-finals. We beat Westhampton in the 1st round of states 17-4. In what has proven to be a long standing rivalry we met Roanoke in the finals for Softball. Robert in hopes of starting a tradition opted to bench himself early in the game. Apparently Roanoke had watch and perfected our technique which we used against AW of the Regional Championship. We lost to Roanoke in a close one 16 – 6.
In Basketball we beat Westhampton 41-14. We lost to Roanoke 32-23 in the closest basketball competition we’ve ever played.
Our friends Westhampton fell victim to Herndon yet again in a 2 game volleyball romp. Again we competed with Roanoke in the finals for volleyball. The game with Roanoke was a tight one we split game and were tied 1-1 going into the last game. Arguable this was some of the best competition ever seen between Roanoke and Herndon, and possibility at Conclave. Eventually we lost in a thriller 15-11.
At the banquet Paul Newhall the Grand High Priest of Royal Arch Mason recognized the efforts of DeMolays around the state and gave special attention to the contributions of Herndon Chapter. PMC Ben Brooks was awarded a state scholarship from the scholarship fund of former chapter Missing Link.
Brother Colon Fox the DSMC from Westhampton was elected as the next SMC and Brother Colin Good from Kempsville Chapter was elected Deputy State. Kempsville Chapter won Chapter of the Year and Dad Schimmel of Alexandria Washington Chapter won Advisor of the Year. Our own Bryce Dexter removed his collar and returned to the ranks after concluding his tenure as the Virginia State Association State Master Councilor.
No stop to South Western Virginia and the Roanoke Valley is complete with a trip to The Homeplace. For those of you how don’t know, you better ask somebody, then slap yourself. The Homeplace may be the best all you can eat, home-style cooking establishment in Virginia.
Dad CP no doubt is upset that he missed the excursion but helped with travel for the brothers Gillenwater. All and all we left Conclave with full bellies, unfettered by trophies. Most importantly Conclave gave us the ability to start fresh for this Conclave year. Conclave 2009 be warned Cdr. William L. Herndon is coming for ya.
Master Councilor's Message - 7.6.08
Brethren,
This past month has been very exiting. We participated in the Relay for Life on June
7th and 8th. I want to thank Dad Westerman and Dad Nye for being the advisors
for a long tiring night and morning . June 7th Before the Relay for Life Dad Nye,
Louie, Bryce, Jeff and Myself went to Luray. That turned out very well and we had
one person get initiated.
We are looking forward to Conclave this year. It is July 17-20 this year, earlier than
in the past years. We had a fun time playing basketball at McLean High School. I
think Zach get the “hardest player” award. He was sliding all over the floor, working
hard. We lost, but gave them a good game! We then played volleyball at Haley
Smith and won! Neither team had enough to play softball, so we had a friendly
game between advisors and brothers. HOT, but totally fun.
Have a safe a happy July 4th.
Thanks Guys,
Blake G. (MC)

Italian Dinner - 11.28.06
Our Italian Dinner went GREAT!
We had everyone working, because all the tables were full.We were able to have Mrs.Hamm in the back helping us cook. She really knows what she is doing! Will was also a big help. We celebrated a birthday and served everyone cake who wanted some. Over all, it went well and we made a nice profit.
Game night at Ivy's was a blast! Getting to see his new house was cool. We played Counter Strike, Game Cube and X Box. Ivy used his new grill, he cooked hamburgers and hot dogs. He even made us some TOTS! It was a lot of fun hanging out with everyone.

Nats vs. Mets This Month! - 9.5.06
Herndon DeMolay would like to invite all of its members and their parents to attend the Nationals vs. NY Mets game on September 29. We are going to meet at the lodge at 5:30 pm. Bryce and I need to know everyone who plans to attend so that we can get tickets in advance that are all in the same section. We believe this will be a good event for parents to spend time with their children and other DeMolays, so we strongly encourage all to participate.
Fraternally,
Paul McClaughry
Master Councilor Elect
Active Participation in a Growing Chapter - 9.5.06
It’s hard to believe that another summer has come and gone. With both positive and encouraging remarks from adults we encounter at many of our events, i.e. Fun Company, DJs, Fairfax Fair, etc., I am constantly reminded why we enjoy working with the DeMolay and see the reward of their growth and confidence as they develop plans and projects and share in their success and failures. I encourage any member that may have any ideas or questions regarding any activities, past, present or future, to not hesitate to contact your Chapter Dad (Ivy) or one of your councilor officers. Your Councilors and Committee Chairs have a fun and ambitious calendar planned for the upcoming term and we hope that no one is excluded because they “forgot” or “didn’t know.” Your chapter dad has revised our website at HerndonDeMolay.org and a calendr is there that will be constantly updated. Please let everyone know about this – It will be a GREAT recruiting tool as well.
Yours in DeMolay,
Dad Craig Dexter,
Advisory Council Chairman
Chapter Visitations - 9.5.06
Over the next year as Deputy State Master Councilor, I am strongly encouraging the members of Herndon DeMolay, and the rest of the state, to visit as many chapters as possible.. I have already met many new people and made many new friends from all over North America. We will be visiting other chapters both in and outside of our great commonwealth during the course of my term and would encourage and interested DeMolay to join me whenever possible. I want to extend the message that DeMolay is ALL OVER THE WORLD, not just in our home chapter.
Sincerely and Fraternally,
Bryce Dexter, PMC
Deputy State Master Councilor, VA DeMolay
Dear Brethren and Family - 8.2.06
On Saturday, July 29th, The Virginia State Association of the Order of DeMolay, held their annual Installation of Officers at Radford University. Cdr. Wm. L. Herndon Chapter had the unique privilege and honor to have ALL THREE that were installed that day to come from our chapter - Bro. Ramone L. Nickens, State Master Councilor, Bro. Bryce M. Dexter, Deputy State Master Councilor, and Bro. Louis M. D'Agostino, State Representative DeMolay. The State has entrusted the future of VA DeMolay to these fine young men and those of us who have been fortunate to work with them as they developed into leaders in DeMolay know that this confidence is well-earned and deserved.
Fraternally,
Craig Dexter, LOH, COH, Chev, PMC

The Conclave Effect - 7.31.06
Why does everyone get so excited about Conclave? Ask one of the 28 Herndon DeMolays and advisors who went this year! We built up to it over the past three months with sports and DeMolay degree practices, car washes, proficiency drives and hectic meetings. Four Days of energy sucking fun, four days of brotherhood. You know by now that the chapter is growing, that the number and variety of our events are increasing, and that we stand taller and stronger as we advance upon a new term, and a new year. We have returned with new awards, titles and nicknames, but let us not forget the events of this past weekend. Bring the excitement to the chapter room, take the fellowship to school with you, give the members who could not attend a taste of what they missed. I love DeMolay; The fun, the leadership, the learning, and above all things, the brotherhood; I share it everyday. ─ Your Chapter Dad, Ivy
Summer Time - 7.3.06
The number of chapter activities always seems to explode during the summer
months. This year is no exception so please keep in mind the following upcoming
large events. At the last meeting of the northern region, the brethren settled
on July 15th as the date for our annual sports competitions, 12 noon at Manasseh
Lodge. The chapter has agreed to compete in Volleyball, Basketball, Softball,
Chess, and Darts. All boys who plan on attending Conclave must not only voice
their intentions to attend, but also pay registration costs of $100 per person
to the chapter by July 7th. This cost will be subsidized by the chapter based
on each members involvement in summer our fundraising efforts. The deadline for
Key man conference registrations is also fast approaching, due July 10th to Dad
Ivy. I suggest that all medical forms accompany registration, although they are
not necessarily due at this time. Paul is organizing a spaghetti dinner
fundraiser for the end of the month, July 23rd from 5:00 - 8:00 pm; volunteers
are still needed.
Honors for the Chapter - 6.30.06
Each yeah the International Supreme Council is privileged to bestow honors upon individuals who have shown unfaltering dedication throughout their DeMolay careers. Our chapter is proud to see three such members honored from our ranks. Our State Master Councilor, Raymone Nickens, and Northern Region Master Councilor, Bryce Dexter, will be receiving the degree of Chevalier on July 9th at 2:30 PM in the North room of the George Washington National Masonic Memorial in Alexandria. The degree of Chevalier is the highest honor which can be given to an active DeMolay, awarded for faithful service and not by merit alone. Dad Craig Dexter, a chartering member and currently the chapter chairman, will also be receiving the Legion of Honor, the highest honor which can be bestowed by the International Supreme Council for unprecedented service to our order. The brethren are encouraged to attend these induction ceremonies in support of our chapter.
