The 125th Anniversary Souvenir

Having posted the first 100 years of Lodge Callendar from the Centenary Souvenir, I was given the 125th Anniversary Souvenir by Past Master Brother Willie Davidson.

This booklet contained the original Centenary Booklet and had been updated to include details of the Centenary Celebrations and takes into account the next 25 years.

Below is a transcript of that 2nd booklet. It is a continuation from the first 100 years and covers up to the 125th Anniversary Celebrations. The information and images have been obtained from the 125th Anniversary Souvenir Booklet which was issued to mark the 125th Anniversary Celebrations of the Lodge in 2001.

I would thank again R.W.M. Bro. Colin Chalmers for his permission to publish this information.

A HISTORY OF
LODGE CALLENDAR No.588, FALKIRK
SINCE ITS CENTENARY CELEBRATION
IN MAY 1976.

Having attained our 125 years of our Masonic Craft in our
town of Falkirk, and the province of Stirlingshire, the
committee considered it would be both prudent and relevant to
include the reprint of our first
One Hundred Years History
which would inform our present day brethren of our past
progress, and also those who are yet to follow.

A CHANGING TOWN

It is prudent to record at this time in our history the vast changes on our town since our centenary in 1976.

The town centre and surrounding areas have seen a tremendous transformation in demolition and rebuilding.

Our town centre is now a pedestrianised precinct which affects our vehicle access to our Lodge, and our adjacent building is at present undergoing a re-vamp of licensed premises and restaurant, formerly the Aitkens Brewery offices. The pleasance area has been rebuilt in Camelon along with the baths and the former railway depot at Grahamston is now a huge retail shopping park with cinema complex.

The Forth and Clyde Canal, after 50 years of dormancy, has now been re-structured for boating traffic in the new millennium with the help of lottery finance.

The former Silver Row Roxy Theatre and housing and school at the East End has been demolished and had two redevelopments and is now the Callender Shopping Centre.

Falkirk Football Club are now likely to be leaving Brockville and moving to the Westfield area of the town, adjacent to the Middlefield Warehouse complex.

The Graeme High and Falkirk High schools have been demolished and new schools built in their place.

It is comforting and indeed important to observe, that despite the continual changes in our town, the Masonic Lodges of Lodge Callendar, Lodge St John, Falkirk and Lodge Camelon are still serving our community in the principles of our order.

Footnote: Bro. Robert Mather's (RWM 1906-1908) father was the owner of the dog track which he sold to Falkirk Football Club in 1876. Bro Robert's father was a town councillor for 13 years.

 LODGE CALLENDAR No 588

1977 - 2001

We, who are privileged as Office Bearers and members of our Lodge, in the celebration year (125th) are conscious of our predecessors whose vision and aspirations founded our Lodge, sustained it through the latter years of the nineteenth century to the new twenty-first century, to our First Anniversary Silver Jubilee in 1901, under the then, R.W.M., Bro Samuel Porter.

It is interesting to note and compare the costs and the number of candidates in 1901, 1951 and 2001 (anniversary years).

1901 No. of Candidates admitted 50 Cost 2 Guineas (210 pence)
1951 No. of Candidates admitted 35 Cost E-12/- (760 pence)
2001 No. of Candidates admitted Cost £180 (1800 pence)

In 1903 when Brother William Murphy was RWM a record 64 candidates were initiated.

From 1977 to 1987 an average of 20 candidates per year were admitted.

From 1988 to 1998 an average of 11 candidates per year were admitted.

From 1998 to 2001 in 3 years only 13 candidates were admitted.

The fall in numbers joining our craft is universal and of great concern. Many and varied may be the reasons for it, the progress of social society itself or the pace of life in the new millennium.

In the late eighteen eighties (1880) to the early nineteen hundreds (1901) our candidates were low in numbers. There are highs and lows in any organisation, the blessings and teachings of family life are paramount to our order, all of us as members have a responsibility to ensure our Lodge will prosper and celebrate in 2026, it's 150th Anniversary.

ALEX BAIRD

Bro. Alexander Baird, our current Secretary, has served in this office since 1972, previously having served the Lodge in various offices, retiring as Junior Warden. Alex was the Hall Keeper for some eighteen years, his contribution to our Lodge was recognised by Provincial Grand Lodge when in January, 1997 he received the honorary provincial grand rank of Jeweller.

DECEMBER, 1977

Brother James Weir was installed as R.W.M. Unfortunately he suffered an illness and had to retire from office after one year. Gladly he recovered and became a fine piper with Bowmore Pipe Band.

Some 12 Right Worshipful Masters have served the Lodge since 1977, with two years in office and two years as Immediate Past Masters. The Annual Festivals were omitted in 1970, the Annual Burns Suppers are still an enjoyable event on our calendar.

1978

In January the Lodge lost two brethren to the grand lodge above. Brother Alexander Barrie who had been initiated in 1923 and who has received his 50 year diploma in 1973 and Brother Kenneth Smith who was initiated in 1947, a regular attender of the Lodge and served as a Steward for 4 years and as a member of the Enquiry Committee for 18 years.

A brother of quiet demeanour and a supporter of Falkirk Football Club. Another great loss to the Lodge was in the passing of Bro. Adam Howieson Lyon who died on 1st July, 1979. Adam was the second of two brothers who have served the Lodge as R.W.M., (his brother Robert Lyon in 1952-1954 and Adam was R.W.M. 1962-1964). Adam has served as Social Convener for a number of years and served as D. of C. from 1966 to 1979, an office he held with admirable distinction. THE 125th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

The 125th Anniversary Celebrations were held within our Temple on Friday 28th September, 2001. The Ceremony of Rededication was conducted by the Provincial Grand Lodge of Stirlingshire, the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master, Bro. David D. Laing, presiding, with Bro. The Reverend John H. Jenkinson, L.T.C.L. A.I.C.M. Dip. Ed. V. W. Senior Grand Chaplain, of the Grand Lodge of Scotland, and Senior Grand Chaplain of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Stirlingshire, who was conducted around the Lodge by Bro. Alexander Montgomery, Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies.

The Right Worshipful Master of the Lodge, Bro. James D. Craigie, was delivered the Obligation, on behalf of Lodge Callendar and its Brethren, for the present and for the future, after which the Benediction by the Chaplain, brought to a conclusion, a most dignified and solemn ceremony, with a meaningful and thoughtful message of our responsibilities to our Masonic Craft, to our Lodge, and to society.

The Ceremonial Celebrations was followed by a Dinner, with the relevant Toast List being pledged, and another successful chapter in our Lodges History, was brought to a conclusion by the singing of "Auld Lang Syne".

It would be important and appropriate to be retrospective in our thoughts, in this One Hundred and Twenty-Fifth Year, of those Brethren whose wisdom and integrity founded our Lodge, those whose courage and foresight, shouldered the responsibility to build our Masonic Temple, for those of us who were yet to follow.

To date, Three Thousand, Nine Hundred and Ninety-Two candidates have past through our portals, as Members of Lodge Callendar, Sixty-One of whom have had the privilege of serving as R.W. Masters, and many other Brethren who served in Office, some for a lifetime.

The late Thomas Pitcairn, P.M. left us a testimony to all Freemasons, from his own pen,

Inward integrity of the soul should be foremost in all Masons

Character and goodness is fundamental in all Brethren.

DAVID D. LAING, P.M.

Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master.
