Lodge History

Grand Strand Lodge #392 was "Chartered 26th April in the Light Year 5956 (1956)". The Grand Master of South Carolina approved and appointed Brothers Allen McDonald Bruton as Master, Ralph Henry Ellis as Senior Warden, and Bomer Eugene Nance as Junior Warden to organize and operate the Lodge Located on Ocean Drive, or within 3 miles.

The Lodge was located above the bowling alley located on the corner of Main Street and Ocean Drive. The building was owned or leased by Brother Alton Thompson a Charter Member and Grandfather of our Brother David Sowell. He let the Lodge use the apartment for their meetings. Initially, the Lodge had about 50 members so the apartment's bedroom walls were removed to create an opened meeting space to accommodate the membership. There was no air conditioning and only a few, small crank-out windows. The Lodge was across the street from the Pavilion, and during the summer months, was hot and noisy. As an aside, our Past Master Milford Powell owned and lived in the apartment after it was renovated, of course, and has recently vacated the apartment and sold the building.
