The Masters Message

Since the first of the year, the lodge has been busy with the Annual Lodge Banquet, Past Masters Recognition Night, and the Mason of the Year Award that was presented to Brother Bill Rushing. In February the Lamar Medal presentations were made at the Scottish Rite Cathedral. On March 7, Grand Master of Masons in Texas, Most Worshipful Tommy Griffin, was in San Antonio and conducted a conference at the shrine center. We have also been busy conferring degrees. So far since my year began we have had the good fortune to raise Brother Michael Raymond to the sublime degree of a master mason. Brother Raymond hit the ground running and in minimum time was made a master mason. We welcome him to the lodge as a brother and look forward to a rewarding career as a Master Mason. Additionally, we conferred two entered apprentice degrees and both brothers are diligently pursuing the requirements to be passed to the degree of fellow craft. We welcome all three brothers to Valley-Hi Lodge.

I would like to take this opportunity to personally express my thanks to Brothers Frank Tejirina for putting on the degrees and teaching our candidates. Additionally I would like to recognize Brothers Dave Wolfe and Andy Hentschel for their tremendous help to the lodge and their assisting in our degrees. We have had a number of Brethren from other lodges who have helped out in the degrees along with the degree teams and I would like to commend them for their expert work.

We are most fortunate to have our Lodge Treasurer, Brother Joe Paez serving this year as the District Deputy Grand Master of Masonic District 39A. We are proud and honored to have Right Worshipful Paez as our District Deputy Grand Master and wish him the every success during the year.

I am most grateful for all that you have done for this lodge this year. My special thanks go to bro. Bill Rushing, for his outstanding work in providing me his expert knowledge and know how as our lodge project chairman. He has taken a load off my shoulders. It is said, no person, more especially a mason, can live for himself alone. We are guided by the great teaching of masonry, the fatherhood of God, the brotherhood of man, and the chief Masonic virtue, charity or brotherly love.

A Message From RW Joe Paez District Deputy Grand Master District 39A

Greetings my Bretheren all,

I would like to share an experience I had when Officially visiting a Masonic Lodge in District 39-A as District Deputy Master.

The lodge officers had invited their four new entered apprentices to attend the lodge business meeting and witness the official visit of a Grand Lodge Officer. Before the meeting, while in the dinning room breaking bread, a young man in his early twenties was sitting across from me and in conversation he stated that he was a nobody. When I inquired about his comment, he answered, "Because I am only an E.A. Mason. I proceeded to correct his statement by telling him that E.A. Masons are the foundation upon which Master Masons are built and as such, E.A. Masons are important and necessary members of a lodge.

I wonder, how many Entered Apprentice Masons we have lost due to fact that we, Master Masons make them feel inadequate? It is up to you and me to recruit younger men into our fraternity and enhance and secure our Masonic Future. More importantly, to treat these E.A.s as masonic family extending them every courtesy and opportunity to join in our lodge functions. Here is my challenge to all my Bretheren wherever dispursed: Carry on your person 3 blank Petitions, When you meet with a good man that wants to become a better man, hand him the petition and follow-up like a good sales person, Just imagine if every

PAST MASTER NIGHT OBSERVED

The worshipful master of Valley-Hi Lodge observed past masters night at the lodge during a called meeting to recognize and honor those brothers who have previously led the progress of the lodge over the years.

The worshipful master opened the program by stating that “we were assembled to honor a very special group of our brethren whom we affection ally refer to as Past Masters.” He went on to tell each of the past masters present “how they had faithfully and diligently served the lodge as master and faced the trials, tribulations, and personal sacrifices but weathered each of them in turn.” He noted how they “had never let the lodge down and that their concern as to its ongoing well being is part of their character, their life and their very soul.”

The worshipful master then told the past masters that not all lodges enjoy the benefit of the devotion to the lodge by past masters as does Valley-Hi Lodge. He said that in many lodges the past masters seem to routinely vanish. In fact in many lodges it is customary for the Past Master to get his apron and disappear. It makes you wonder why they no longer take an interest in the Lodge. He asks the question “Were they there to simply get their past master apron and no longer care about the lodge?” He thanked the past master of Valley-Hi Lodge for their continued dedication and support and encouraged them to continue in their blue lodge.

The worshipful master then presented each past master in attendance a certificate and a coin. He noted that on behalf of the lodge he wanted to recognize each of the past masters for attaining the status of past master and for the continued attendance and assistance they have provided the lodge. He said we have prepared a very special certificate for each of our beloved Past Masters in recognition of their achievements,

their sacrifices and their ongoing loyalty to the brethren of their lodge. The past master certificate is awarded to the Past Master in honor of his reign in the Orient and his having "mastered" the most prestigious position in the blue lodge.

Valley-Hi Lodge extends its heartfelt and sincere sympathy to the families of our departed Brethren. May the blessing of God abide in abundance with them in their great loss. “How bitter the trial must be; and right through it all God is loving and knows so much better than we”.

This is the first issue of the Valley-Hi Quarterly. As the title implies we plan to prepare one each quarter (thus the name) in which we will recap some of the happenings at the lodge during that quarter and some of the scheduled programs upcoming.

We realize that many of you are unable to be at lodge when the doors open and there are many justified reasons for it. You live out of the lodge area, illness, work, and other commitments and for various other reasons. This doesn't mean that you are not interested in the happenings at the lodge. Hopefully, the Valley-Hi Quarterly will let you know what happened during the quarter.

As you recall we tried publishing the Cornerstone again but just as before there was a lack of contributions of viable material to make it interesting and informative. This format is more simple and too the point. It will not require the singular effort to produce every three months and hopefully will be a welcome "fill-in" for the brethren.

Be sure to let us know what you think of the Valley-Hi Quarterly. Give us your comments and/or suggestions on the lodge email valleyhilodge@hotmail.com. We will try to make it something you find interesting and informative. Let us hear from you.

LODGE HAS A GREAT ANNUAL BANQUET

January 26, 2008 was the date. Valley-Hi Lodge’s Dimmitt Hall was the place. Fun, good company and SUPER! Food was the purpose.

Yes members and guests assembled at the lodge for the annual lodge observance. This is usually done with great food, entertainment and a guest speaker. This year was no different.

Brother Tim, our Senior Steward, was again in charge of the meal which included an entree of rotisserie chicken with all the usual trimmings. Historically Brother Tim has done an outstanding job in preparing the meal and but this year it was super. We are so fortunate to have such a talented “chef”. Members of the Helotes Chapter of Jobs Daughters took care of the serving chores and they did their usual outstanding job of helping. We thank them for their help and assistance.

We were entertained by Silks and his entertaining magic during the evening. Brother John “Silks” Viner is a life member of the Alzafar Menmuf Clown Unit and is currently senior warden of Randolph Masonic Lodge. Routinely he participates in Shrine parades, circus, and performs at special events including hospitals and birthday parties. The guests were so engrossed in his performance they almost forgot their dessert.

Featured as the evening’s guest speaker was Mr. Gary Price currently a certified financial planner with the Air Force Credit Union. He previously a position with MetLife Insurance Company, He has been in financial services for more than 11 years. He holds a master of science in business administration and has earned his securities licenses in five series; He is a charted financial consultant.

Mason Of The Year Award

In accordance with previously announced rules, the Worshipful Master, Senior and Junior Wardens met and considered individuals to be selected as Mason of The Year for calendar year 2007. The worshipful master announced they had selected Brother William L. (Bill) Rushing as Valley-Hi’s first recipient.

In making the presentation the worshipful master noted that this award will be presented annually to a Brother Mason who epitomizes the highest standard of friendship, fellowship, service to the Craft and brotherly love. The man receiving this award has demonstrated a willingness to serve, not only his individual Lodge, but Masonry in general through his conduct and actions during the preceding year. His dedication and service to his Lodge, and the fraternity in general, should stand as an example of conduct to be emulated by his Lodge Brothers, and the general Masonic community at large as well. This man stands out among his peers at almost every level in life, and thus is truly deserving of these accolades which we have chosen to bestow upon him. As a Lodge of Masonry, through this award, we honor the recipient as a valued member of our Lodge and as an intricate and integral part of its continued success in the future.

In making the presentation of the award, the worshipful master said It goes without saying that the "Mason of the Year" award is, without a doubt, one of the highest honors any Mason, in any Lodge, can ever receive and Brother Bill has clearly demonstrated his qualification to receive this prestigious award. Throughout the year he has served the lodge especially in the capacity of program chairman. He has diligently approached the scheduled programs and prepared a script and all the associated items for each program. Additionally he has provided counsel to the lodge on various subjects under consideration.

The worshipful master concluded by thanking Brother Bill for his dedication to the lodge and congratulating him on receiving the first annual Mason Of The Year award.

Dues Increase Necessary

Last year the lodge considered a motion to increase the annual dues $10.00. The pros and cons were discussed thoroughly and the lodge voted favorably to increase the dues to $60.00 per year effective January 1, 2008.

The lodge considered the fact that in today’s economy money is short especially for those of us on a fixed income. With the continuing increase of the costs of almost everything, especially gas, it is difficult to “make end meet”. However, the same formula applies to the Lodge budget. It was pointed out that it costs just under $50.00 a day 365 days a year to operate the lodge whether the Lodge is opened or not. This includes utilities; taxes; insurance; security; and other essential costs.

For the past two to three years the expenses have exceeded the income. The Lodge had to draw from its CDs to meet the financial obligations. Although the lodge had reduced operating expenses to the minimum the income just did not cover the mandatory expenses. The masters have been very critical of discretionary spending and almost eliminated all except essential spending. Members have found ways to support discretionary spending thus relieving the Lodge of the burden.

Several funds raisers have been held or are being planned to provide a source of additional funding. Please watch for announcements soon on the events and participate. Likewise if you have any ideas and suggestions for a funds raiser the Lodge might consider, please let us know.

Please keep in mind that this dues increase is not going to solve the Lodges financial problem. It will provide a small temporary relief but without some major funds assistance, we will have to revisit the subject of dues increase again within a year or two just to keep the Lodge afloat. We will keep you informed as our status changes
