The story of the pre-1900 Freemasonry of the Waikato district is closely interwoven with the military history of the area. Here, more than anywhere in New Zealand, the regular soldiers and the militiamen exerted their influence on the formation and early running of the Lodges. This, however, does not mean that they were "military" Lodges9 that special title being reserved for Lodges operating under Charters held within military regiments. The Waikato Lodges, on the other hand, were essentially "local" Lodges, based on a particular district and warranted to meet only in one place. This fact should always be born in mind,  as these old Waikato Lodges have sometimes been loosely termed "military" Lodges.
The book includes much about the local history of the time.
