Two monitors are best for this presentation. A telephone line is also needed and the hardware necessary to connect both monitors to one computer. They need to be set up and ready to go before the meeting starts.
During this part of the presentation, your audience will surf the web. I usually start at Mastermason.com for two reasons, one, I am impartial to Mastermason Com and mostly because it is a fairly large site which has international flare.
In the Temple, there is entertainment, announcements of world wide events, crossword puzzles, a test of your mouse skills, letters from mail lists, and links. Other sections of this huge site contain lodges, useful programs to download, An Internet Provider Service, and a guestbook which can be signed and read. Everything needed to provide awareness of how to 'surf' is in the Temple.
I want to get my audience interested in the Internet. To get their interest, I want to make the surfing a simple learning process in a informative, but easy to navigate site. Mastermason Com is just that. After this surfing session, My audience should be able to navigate almost any site.
I usually begin by asking the person sitting in front of the computer to click on the service button. The service button will show them what an Internet Service Provider offers and how it is offered. After this section is briefly discussed, we move into the support area. They then how easy it is to download a program. We sign the guestbook telling Mastermason what we think of their site. An idea on this would be to let Mastermason Com know we used there site as the navigation tool for our presentation. This will encourage Mastermason Com to add more information to be used for this purpose. Most love to read the comments in the guestbook, so that is our next stop. The new surfers are now getting an idea of what the internet is, and what to click on to make something happen. We now visit the Temple for some entertainment. We first take a simple mouse test and test our mouse skills. If they pass the test, I immediately give them bragging rites. We treat the temple as a small museum, and look at all the displays. If they like Masonic crosswords, we go to the crosswords. If they want to see an old Masonic Cipher that used to be used to send messages between Masons, we view the cypher page. After receiving a bit of entertainment, we go and read the letters from our international brethren, or visit the International announcements page to see what events are being announced. There is a very cool lion making on the announcement page.
After each person has had a turn while visiting the different areas of this site. We move to the Family Links page and visit other Masonic Sites from around the world. We visit a few just to see what's out there. After each person who wants to surf has surfed, I introduce them to a program called ICQ. I then ask them if they would like to chat with another Mason on the Internet. This leads us to the ICQ part of the presentation.
