Trestleboard, 1999-2004
1. Plan at least two books for this year and at least one for
2000, including one on Lewis and Clark and their implications as first known Masons (Lewis
here, Clark after the trip) in territory on later development of Masonry.
A. 125th Anniversary book -- some parts of Masonic Centennial book in precis, then make
up last 25 years. Short history of Shrine Temples, Eastern Star, Scottish & York
Rites.
I. Need Committee members for each appendant body.
II. Include N.D. Grand Lodge history since break in 1889 -- AND N.D. side of
territorial history.
III. MUST, interviews of 2 Dakota sitting GMs on future of the Territory/States.
IV. Maybe interviews of Iowa & Minnesota GMs on difficulties of getting lodges
separately chartered by those 2 grand lodges into DT Grand Lodge.
V. Check Iowa and Minn. GL historians on charters of military lodges here. E.g., Fort
Randall had a dispensation for lodge in early 1860s never converted to charter. How about
other SD/DT military posts, especially Fts. Sisseton & Meade -- even Ft. Randall?
B. Regular Masonic Papers book. Have several suggestions, including L. Hornstra
possibility, one paper held by Dick Luther PGM, ...?
C. For both printings, need:
I. Get bids for printing & binding. Milo Dailey & Wally Mundstock with Sect.
Richard Luther, PGM.
II. Prepare marketing plan -- in conjunction perhaps with membership promo.
a. Especially L&C piece should be salable, but so should 125th.
2. Web site up by August, 1999. W.M. Milo, Watertown, to assist
Chairman Dale Miskimins with html files for web links. Material contributions from S.W.
Wally Mundstock, Redfield. Feedback, suggestions, contributions, etc., from committee
members.
3. W.M. Milo check to get set of lodge officer aprons &
jewels for SDLMR occasional communications other than concurrent with Grand Lodge of SD
annual communication.
4. Oral History Committee form list of Shrine Temples, Eastern
Star, Scottish & York Rites.
A. Need Committee members for each appendant body. Need lists of significant persons,
including PGMs and parallels in appendant bodies.
I. Past Grand Masters -- need lists
II. Past Potentates, Shrine Temples -- need lists
III. York, Scottish Rite senior officers? -- need lists
B. Include N.D. Grand Lodge history since break in 1889 -- AND N.D. side of territorial
history.
C. Work for proper housing of current SDLMR archives and future holding of Oral History
Collection, including photos, transcriptions, etc. Check with current Oral Historians
(Hbt. Hoover of USD and lives Beresford?) on proper storage of tapes after transcription.
5. Plan Masonic Observance of Lewis & Clark expedition
A. Emphasize first known Mason in S.D. was Meriwether Lewis & Wm. Clark soon after
was made Mason
B. Name Committee to consider program, including work with Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa,
North Dakota and Montana Grand Lodges and/or Lodges of Masonic Research, and S.D.
Historical Society.
I. At least find what others are doing if anything.
a. Note Mobridge Shrine Club (?) or Blue Lodge had a L&C float this year!
II. Position S.D. for position of hosting a Masonic L & C Trail meeting in S.D. for
some sort of publication or Masonic research paper.
III. Prepare report for late fall/early Winter SDLMR meet. on this labor.
IV. Determine action program at fall/winter SDLMR meet
for further action.
V.
C. Committee to consider location and program for a S.D. Masonic monument to our first
Mason in state currently includes Chas. Kaufman, S.G.W. and Rollie French, both of
Vermillion. (If Yankton chosen for something, e.g. at Territorial Capitol Replica, David
Hosmer, P.M., there is on city commission until next spring to aid in placement on city
property.)
I. Should be in town with daily newspaper ... Pierre, Yankton? USD tie in Vermillion?\
public tv?
II. Discuss with S.D. Historical Society other planned observances in state -- possible
coordination with other Grand Lodges?
a. N.D. Grand Master and S.D. G.M. talk of doing together things already, I mentioned
this possibility and response was favorable from both.
III. Have action plan ready by year 2000 Grand Lodge and SDLMR meeting ... &
presentation to Grand Lodge.
IV. Prepare recommendation of a Masonic paper or reprint of SDLMR paper as a pamphlet
on L&C for inexpensive distribution as Masonic PR piece.
V. purchase marker
6. Membership revival:
A. Set goals of minimum doubling research lodge membership. Each one reach one.
Note, new W.M. of SDLMR brought two GMs, and three or so more, to new membership in one
day. One or two at other meetings by each member would double membership.
B. SDLMR Master's Challenge:
a. Certificates and spring meeting recognition for
5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and Diamond memberships.
b. Plaque for individual with most new members.
C. Pursue with GM North Dakota for double charter for this Lodge of Research to
encourage both N.D. membership, possible expansion of new N.D. Interest Section Committee
into separate lodge OR combining into Dakota (Territorial?) Lodge of Masonic Research.
Regardless, additional membership and promotion of membership & publications with
slightly higher charge -- and perhaps wider marketing such as at Wall Drug, in regional
interest areas of bookstores -- could help cover expenses of publications and research
efforts.
7. Name committee at August meet to plan fall/winter meeting via
2-way RDTN television. Date, practical places, coffee/cookie committees, etc.
8. Master to do column for Bulletin each issue noting progress
on the above Trestleboard.
A. Copies of significant correspondence to S.D. Grand Lodge officers and GM of N.D.,
Minn., Iowa and Wisconsin -- the latter for assistance on reenactor activities under
SDLMR.
B. Copies of significant correspondence maintained in Project 2004 5-year Trestleboard
file along with copies of occasional lodge minutes to track progress of Trestleboard
plans.
