Greetings from the East:

Although we have enjoyed the first few meetings of the year, the start has been just a tad on the rough side, as you will see from the following.

First, Sister Florence Marie Warren, P.M., passed away on May 3, 2008. An Eastern Star service was held at the Church of the Transfiguration in Blue Ridge Summit, PA, on May 6, where she and Brother Bob, P.P., had established membership. Members of Olive Branch No. 34, shared in filling some of the stations, as Sister Marie would have wanted.

Then, on May 11, Brother H. Rodgers Gore, Jr., P.P., lost his battle to live from his injuries. Again, there was an Eastern Star service on May 16, this time with all offices taken by Ruth Chapter members. On May 17, several Chapter members hosted a luncheon for the Gore family and friends after the funeral. Our prayers continue to go with Sister Edna, P.M.

Then, we learned that our Installing Grand Officer, Sister Ida R. Fuller, P.G.M., Adah No. 25, lost her fight with cancer on May 17. Several members of Ruth Chapter attended the services conducted by her Chapter, as well as an Amaranth service, in which Sister Ann, P.M., and Brother Roy, P.P., Rakes participated.

We had our first visitation by our new Deputy Grand Lecturer, Shawn M. Garren of Unity Chapter No. 112. Her name may be familiar to some of you, as her Dad, Patrick Curtis, P.P., Unity Chapter, served as Master of Mount Hermon Lodge a few years back. She had been assigned to Julia Halla No. 107 in prior years, and is happy to be given a Chapter just a bit closer to her home. While we will miss Sister Judith Harrison, who was our Deputy for a few years, we are equally happy to get to know Sister Shawn.

We are enjoying our Summer vacation, even if the cost of fuel is keeping many of us closer to home than in prior years. However, we look forward to resuming labor in September, and hope that we will see some not-too-familiar faces in our Chapter room. With Sister Ellen’s fracture and the long recovery she is facing, the Worthy Patron and I are trying to keep up with some of our members. We look forward to resuming our activities in September, and would like to see some of our area members come out for an occasional meeting. Our first meeting will be held after the traditional pot luck dinner (meat and bread to be furnished). Bring a side dish, salad, or dessert as you can. If you have difficulty, come anyway - we usually have plenty of food!

Over the Summer, the Worthy Grand Matron approached the Secretary and Worthy Matron about hosting the Virginia in Maryland Exchange at our Grand Visitation on October 9. We indicated that Ruth Chapter has generally accepted the requests of the Worthy Grand Matron. Subject to a vote of the Chapter on September 15, we plan to host this Exchange, and hope that our area members will be able to join in the festivities.

Some of you may have noticed that Trustees are no longer listed with our Officers. When we amended our By-Laws last year, we deleted the Trustee positions. The By-Laws Committee and Chapter members voting determined that they were not necessary. Our Treasurer has been doing an excellent job of maintaining our assets.

Chapter News:

A proposed amendment to the Chapter By-Laws was presented at our meeting in June. You will find it included with this newsletter. Voting on this proposed amendment will be held at our October 20 meeting.

It is never good to pass along the news of illness, but we want to keep our sick and shut-in members in our thoughts and prayers. Please do the same. If you would like to drop any of these members a card or note, we know it would be appreciated. Nobody likes to find a mailbox full of nothing but bills and junk mail. As we get older, the frailties of life catch up with us.

Sister Margarie Hall, P.M., has had more than one hospital stay, and she has Brother Don back at home. Brother Don did receive respite care while Sister Marge was in hospital and for part of her recuperation time. She still needs our prayers as she takes care of him. Brother Don is still limited to his bed and a wheelchair as a result of the serious stroke he suffered in 2001, and also needs our prayers.

Sister M. Ellen Groomes, P.M., has returned to live with her daughter after undergoing therapy at Manor Care in Arlington. Her new address is given below.

Brother Ferris ‘Tommy’ Grow, P.P., underwent gallbladder surgery in late June, and Sister Annie, P.M., has been through several health problems that have left her feeling that she cannot come to Chapter. We hope these two will be well enough to join us for a daytime event sometime soon.

Sisters Margaret, P.M., and Barbara Woltz were at the Eastern Star service for Brother Rodgers Gore, P.P. This was the first time your Worthy Matron had a chance to meet them [she had tried a few times to phone them, but managed to call when they were not at home - probably dealing with doctors]. They indicated that they were doing enough better that they might feel strong enough to come to an occasional Chapter meeting. That would be nice! In late July, Sister Margaret attended the launch of the Lawrence Woltz, Prince George’s County’s new fireship stationed at National Harbor. She christened the ship with the usual champagne, and even had her picture in the Washington Post.

Sister Edna Gore’s daughter, Edna ‘Tink’ Leimbach, said that she would try to get together with her for lunch, a hairdresser’s appointment, and attendance at Chapter meetings in the Fall. ‘Tink’ is a member of Pentalpha Chapter No. 38, in Germantown. She agrees with us that Edna needs to get out, even if she decides not to be Installed as Adah Star Point.

Sisters Dorothy Cogswell and Virginia Perholtz, P.M.’s, keep in frequent touch with our Secretary by e-mail. The Worthy Matron received a ‘snail mail’ from Sister Dorothy, and was very happy to hear from her. We know she hasn’t been in the best of health, but hope things will improve as the weather warms. We miss these devoted Sisters, and would love to see them if they decide to travel North.

We haven’t listed these appointments in the past, but think our out-of-towners and others who cannot get to Chapter might be interested in knowing who are our Grand Chapter ‘worker bees’.

Sister Dorothy Payne, P.M., has had the chance to travel to New Jersey to visit her sister, Marietta. We miss her in Chapter, but she is unable to drive at night. She has taken several bus trips with us, but we can no longer do them because of the difficulties involved in organizing these things. While the Worthy Matron and Patron live near her, their going early and staying late makes it too long an evening.

And - a piece of happy news. Sister Geraldine Smith, P.M., traveled up from Georgia to visit Sister H. Louise Coomes, P.M., and surprise Sister Ellen Groomes in Chapter. The latter didn’t happen for reasons noted above. However, your Worthy Matron and Patron had not previously had the opportunity to meet her and were very happy to have a face to put with the name. Please don’t stay away so long before your next visit, Sister Jerry.
If you feel left out of the Chapter News, please drop us a line and let us know how you are doing.

Sister Karen Gardner, Secretary, reports that we still have some members who have not paid this years (2008) dues, which were due on March 1. Members with less than 50 years of membership pay $9.50 (includes $4.50 per capita) except those who are life members. 50 year members and over pay only the per capita which is $4.50. Please remit to the secretary, as she would hate to suspend you for non-payment of dues. If there is a problem with finances, just give Sister Karen a call.

With fraternal love,

Eleanor M. ‘Elly’ Lim, P.G.M., D.C., W.M. Benjamin ‘Ben’ H. Lim, P.P., W.P.

DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that Ruth Chapter once had a wood stove in the chapter room?  Did you know that Sister Louise Groomes used to lie on the piano bench when her mother was WM?  Did you know that one of our members made the alter for the Chapter? Did you know that dances were once held in the building?  Come to chapter and learn some other facts about us.
