| Our
ladies and families play a major part in El Jaala's program. Almost every one of our
events is open to ladies (and guests). In March of 2000, the decision was made to formalize a
local "Daughters of Mokanna", which is the national official women's
organization affiliated with the grotto. Grace Schermerhorn was selected as its first
presiding officer, which is called the Mighty Chosen One. In August
of 2001, Supreme Mighty Chosen One Ruby Kalkman and two dozen
daughters from around the country instituted the ladies and installed
the same officers to continue for their first official year. The
Charter was presented to Grace in Canton, OH at the Supreme Session in
September.
The main goals of El
Jaala Daughters of Mokanna are to provide a social meeting place for the ladies of El
Jaala Grotto, to support the programs of El Jaala Grotto and the Grotto Supreme Council,
and to support masonic programs, facilities, and charities.
The ladies meet on the
2nd Thursday of each month at the Skokie Masonic Temple at 7:00 with
dinner following. Their first social functions include dinners with the
grotto prophets and trips to events like Dairyland Greyhound Park in Kenosha,
WI, Navy Pier, Boat Tours, and whatever else the members choose to do.
Their main volunteer
efforts have been directed towards the Illinois Masonic Children's Home in LaGrange, IL,
where they have held events like ice cream socials. movie nights, and
craft parties for the kids.
Any female 18 or over
that is related to a Mason is eligible to become a Daughter of Mokanna. We hope
you'll consider becoming a member!
