May 2003

Dear Brother,

On Saturday, May 31 we host the Red Cross Bloodmobile from 8 a.m. to noon. Please tell your friends and neighbors about this opportunity to help save a life. We also need you to assist with the drive and to donate blood. Please call Bob Mangum at 732-8501 to make an appointment to give or for more information.

Ladies Night is scheduled for July 12 at 5:30 p.m. All Master Masons, their spouses or dates, and widows of Master Masons are invited to this annual dinner. We will have more details later.

Eagle Lodge has resembled a beehive during the past month. On April 25 the lodge opened its doors as the rain site for Hillsborough’s Last Friday celebration. About 300 people toured the lodge, listened to a four- piece jazz band from the UNC Department of Music and learned about the history and charitable works of Masonry. The next Last Friday is May 30. We hope to see you then.

On May 8 we were pleased to host historian Barbara Church, who presented a lecture on William Nichols, architect of Eagle Lodge and several other significant buildings around the state. Forty people attended, including Grand Secretary Walt Clapp and NC Mason Editor Ric Carter from the Grand Lodge of North Carolina.

The lodge is looking good thanks to Bob Patten, Jeff Borcik, Larry Aydlett and Gregg Phillips, who spent Saturday morning May 10 painting the portico. Weather permitting, we’ll add a second coat on the morning of May 24. We would love for you to join us.

The painting is part of our plan for regular lodge maintenance. The first step was taken April 24 when WBs Jake Neville and Mitch Lloyd removed the old oil tank. Way to go, brothers!  The next step, after painting the portico, is to repoint mortar outside and repair plaster and repaint inside. Gregg Phillips made a beautiful walnut donation box, which we have placed just inside the front door. Donations placed in the box, and various fund-raising projects, will help finance the work.

Many members of Eagle have contributed to the Masonic and Eastern Star Home but we have not met our $1,000 goal. We ask for a donation of only $15 per member. Please send your check, payable to Eagle Lodge, to us at P.O. Box 1095, Hillsborough, N.C., 27278. Indicate on the check that you are contributing to MESH. Thank you.

Next stated communications: May 27, June 10 and June 24. Meetings are on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 7:30 p.m. We want to see you. If you need a ride to the Lodge, please call any of us.
