CHAPTER XIV

ST. JOHN'S DAY 1812

[From Selections from Calcutta Gazettes, Vol. IV. 1]

Thursday, January 2, 1812

On Friday, being St. John's Day, the Members of the Masonic Lodges of Calcutta and Fort William, accompanied by a number of other Brethren, not attached to any Lodge at the Presidency, assembled at Moore's Rooms, from whence they moved in procession at about half after nine o'clock, to St. John's Church, preceded by the Band of His Majesty's 24th Regiment. On their arrival at the Church, an excellent Sermon suited to the occasion, was preached by the Reverend Dr. Ward.

(Note: As D'Cruz observes, 'Dr. Ward's sermon stirred up the zeal of the Brethren of the dormant Lodge Star in the East.' The Lodge was revived on January 2" 1812 and the new Master Bro. Blaquiere 'remarked that the able and impressive discourse of the Rev. Bro. Ward on the last St. John's Day, delivered by him to a numerous body of the Fraternity, had contributed chiefly to the effort that was being, made for the revival of the Lodge.' On 18 September 1812 in recognition of his services the Rev. Bro. Ward was elected as the Provincial Grand Master 'for the approbation of the Grand Lodge of England.' (op. cit., 94))
