Freemasonry is a noble adventure of human
mind. It is not known where it first germinated, but it sprouted
in Great Britain and was transplanted to British India. Calcutta
can boast of the Craft for more than two centuries. At first a
close preserve of the European Christians, it was Later opened
up for the Indians, who took it up in right earnest. It had the
patronage of top Government Officials in Old Calcutta. It inculcated
the noble virtues of morality, benevolence and charity. It widened
the mental horizons of the foreign rulers and instilled a spirit
of universal brotherhood in their minds. Belief in God was, and
still is, its sheet anchor. Orderly rituals, devotion to ideals
and collective entertainment combined to make a Freemason a better
man. Its mystery and symbolism touched the heart rather than the
brain. In Old Calcutta, it had its ebb and flow, rough and calm
waters; down below, its silent perennial under current. In any
case, Freemasonry was a living institution in the Old City.
