Robert Anderson
(1805 - 1871)

Major in command of the harbor defenses at Charleston, SC, who surrendered the Union forces at Fort Sumter, April 14, 1861 at the commencement of the Civil War. The command was permitted to leave with their weapons and their flag. Brigadier General in 1861. On April 14, 1865, Brevet Major General Anderson raised the same tattered flag over the ruins of Fort Sumter, symbolically concluding the Civil War.
