On this day in 1787, the Constitutional convention opens at Philadelphia with Mason George Washington presiding.

On this day in 1851 Mason Jose Justo de Urquiza of Argentina leads a rebellion against Juan Manuel de Rosas, his former ally.

Justo Jose de Urquiza He was an Argentine patriot, general, and first constitutional president of Argentina from 1854to 1860. He was governor of Entre Rios province from 1842-1854. Caseros Day (Independence) in Argentina on February 3 celebrates his defeat of the tyrant, Juan Manuel de Rosas. He reorganized the dismembered country and called a conference of provincial governors. Out of this grew a confederation. He was succeeded by Derqui. He was commander in chief of the national forces. He was defeated in the Battle of Pavon in 1862, and General Mitre was proclaimed president. Urquiza pledged his support to Mitre, but declined appointment as commander in chief of cavalry, and returned to his huge ranch, where he and two sons were murdered in 1870. He was initiated in "Jorge Washington" Lodge No. 44 at Conception and rose to the 33rd AASR. He later became a member of the Union del Plate Lodge. Four successive presidents of Argentina were members of this lodge at the same time. In addition to Uriquiza they were: Santiago Derqui, president from 1860-1862; General Bartolme Mitre, president from 1862-1868 and Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, president from 1868-1874.

On this day in 1997, U.S. Senator and Mason Strom J. Thurmond became the longest-serving senator in U.S. history by serving 41 years and 10 months. He was a U.S. Senator from South Carolina; Governor of South Carolina, 1947 to 1951. He was born on December 5, 1902 in Edgefield, South Carolina. He was a Graduate of Clemson College in 1923, and admitted to the bar in 1930. He was variously county superintendent of education in Edgefield. County, state senator, and circuit judge. He was chairman of the Southern Governors Conference of 1950. In 1948 he was the States Rights Party candidate for president of the United States. Served in 82nd Airborne Div. in WWII and became brigadier general in Army Reserve. He was a member of Concordia Lodge No. 50, Edgefield, S.C. He entered the Celestial lodge on June 26, 2003 at Edgefield, South Carolina. His body was interned at the family plot at the Willowbrook Cemetery in Edgefield, South Carolina.
