On this day in 1806, while hunting elk along the Missouri River, Mason and explorer Meriwether Lewis was shot in the hip, probably by one of his own men.
Mason, Meriwether Lewis and Mason, William Clark had embarked on their epic journey to explore the pacific two years earlier. The 33 members of the Corps of Discovery had experienced many adventures and narrowly escaped disaster on several occasions, but they lost only one person and suffered relative few injuries. Now they were almost finally home as St. Louis was about a month away.

On this day in 1941 - The Atlantic Charter was signed by Mason and U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt and Mason and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
