To all Masons wheresoever dispersed:
Greetings Brethren,
Welcome to the website of the 29th Masonic District of the Grand Lodge of Ancient Free Masons of South Carolina.
This District represents all of Horry County (pronounced
O’ree) and most of Georgetown County and supports 12 very active Lodges
which are listed elsewhere on this site.
We
are proud of the tradition of Masonry in this area and of the good work
that we feel is done here. If you are here visiting on vacation or have
recently moved into the area and are a Mason in good standing of a
Lodge recognized by our Grand Lodge, we would be glad to have you visit
any Lodge convenient to you. I believe you will find your welcome warm
in any Lodge you may choose and the area rich in Masonic History.
Horry
County is named after Col. Peter Horry who served under Gen. Francis
"The Swamp Fox" Marion during the Revolutionary War. It is thought that
Francis Marion was a Mason, although no proof exists to verify that.
However, of course, they both served Gen. George Washington whom we
certainly know to be one of the first American Masons. Georgetown
County and the City of Georgetown are named for King George of England.
The city of Georgetown, founded in 1729, is home to one of our oldest
Lodges, Winyah #40.
The
twelve Lodges in this District have a combined membership of nearly
2000 members and would be glad to consider for affiliation Masons
recognized by our Grand Lodge now living in the area. Please consider
this an invitation to visit us and become involved in South Carolina
Masonry.
If
you would like additional information just click on the one of the
links listed on the left for Lodge Locations, Events, Schedules, and
more.
May God richly bless and protect you in all of your travels.
Fraternally,
RWBro. Hugh C. "Hugger" Peteet
District Deputy Grand Master
