Rockford

Rockford had its beginnings in 1834 as Midway, so identified by Germanicus Kent who established it because it was about midway between Galena, where he had settled, and Chicago. Kent was a land speculator and he chose the west side of the Rock River for the site of his settlement. He was soon joined by Daniel Shaw Haight, who decided to create a town on the east side of the Rock. The dynamic city of Rockford is the economic focal point among several communities flourishing on the gently rolling land that flanks the Rock River in north central Illinois. With a population of more than 143,000, Rockford is the area's industrial center, its cultural heart, its commercial hub, and its major educational resource center.
