And don't miss the HTML and advanced HTML sections for more about your Web building-block basics.

I also really liked this article about building Web sites, written from the perspective of the Web-creation professional.

When you first take a look around
Code Beach, you may be as happy as a kid in a candy store. You’ll find areas on the site dedicated to source code, tutorials, programming books, and even a job board, and each area appears to have a lot of content. But when you look a little closer, you’ll notice that the things you see are actually just links to other sites. Very little of the content is actually hosted by Code Beach. Now, that's only a problem if you let it be. For most people, there's as much value in having organized links as there is in having the actual goods on the site. Figure A shows our At-A-Glance review of Code Beach.

By Helen Bradley, posted Aug 28, 2000

The first time you open Access and use it to create a small database, you'll probably think you're using a very big hammer to crack a very small nut. And you're probably be right. Access is a powerful and complex database program and using it to manage a simple database is slight overkill. However, there's no better way to learn about Access than by actually using it.

(In order to write an Access data driven web page (with ASP) you need to know something about Access)

Kev explores what's invovled in using ASP to interact with an MS Access database to generate dynamic Web pages on the fly. Follow along as he builds a Web-based FAQ system that you can use on your own site!

(first of a six part series. But first study the 4 articles by Kevin Yank and the 2 by Helen Bradley above.)

    limitations of MS Access

Before you take your new-found ASP database skills and go implement a system such as the example I presented in this article on your own site, there is an important issue that you need to be aware of. Microsoft Access was never designed to be used as a heavy-duty backend for database-driven Websites. The number of simultaneous connections that it can handle is extremely limited, so if your Website receives more than a handful of visitors at a time, Access will likely not hold up under the strain. A good discussion that covers the limitations of MS Access when used in this way is available here: 15 Seconds: The Truth About Access.

(Before you go to the trouble of studying the above you might want to read this one, and go to SQL server instead of Access)

You can adjust the captured picture's brightness, contrast,

    Capture Express

It takes you how many tries to capture an area on the screen? If you are using something other than Capture Express, then the answer may very likely be "several tries".
Unlike other capture programs which do not permit you to move the "grabber" once you start the capture, Capture Express allows you to toggle between a stretch mode and a move mode by right clicking on the mouse. So if you didn't quite get your alignment correct when you started your capture, simply click on the right mouse button and move the grabber to the correct alignment. Other programs will require you to abort the whole capture process and start again in the hope that you get the correct alignment.

Besides capturing basic Screens, Windows and rectangular areas, Capture Express allows you to capture items in a variety of shapes. Optionally place borders around the shapes and choose a masking color for the exterior of the shape. Some of the shapes available include rounded rectangles, circles, ellipses, diamonds, triangles, stars and other user defined shapes such as an octagon or house figure shape. Print, Save or E-Mail your captured images.

    Only $15.00
(plus shipping and handling for CD-ROM or Floppy delivery)
