Arc Raises $15,000 at 7th Annual Step Up for The Arc Walk

Ventnor City, NJ – October 13, 2009 – More than 175 people walked in The Arc of Atlantic County’s 7th annual Step Up for The Arc Walk on the Ventnor boardwalk Saturday, October 10, helping to raise much needed funds and awareness for The Arc’s programs that support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  To date, walkers raised more than $15,000 to support programs that include recreation and family support.

As part of the registration process, walkers were invited to take the “Cut It Out!” pledge sponsored by the New Jersey Statewide Self-Advocacy Network which asked signers to eliminate the demeaning use of the words “retard” and “retarded” from their vocabulary.  Whether intentional or not, the words invoke a painful stereotype for people with intellectual disabilities.

Following the 3.4 mile walk, participants gathered at St. James Roman Catholic Church where they enjoyed refreshments provided by the Masonic Lodges of the 23rd district, magic by Chad Juros, a visit from SpongeBob SquarePants, face painting by Ginny Swift, a bounce house and music by DJ Paul Palmisano of The Record Company.

Walkers received an event t-shirt designed by Arc service recipient Pamela Villegas, of Hammonton, who won the Step Up for The Arc Walk t-shirt design contest.

Step Up for The Arc was presented by The Arc of Atlantic County in conjunction with The Arc of New Jersey and all of the local county chapters of The Arc as part of the annual statewide walkathon of The Arc, the state’s largest non-profit advocacy and service organization supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.

The 2009 statewide sponsor for Step Up for The Arc is Hinkle, Fingles & Prior, Attorneys at Law, with additional support from Mars Snackfoods and the Grand Lodge of New Jersey, Free and Accepted Masons.  Major local sponsors include Cape Bank Foundation, JBHVAC Inc., Milton’s Appliance, Easy Living Vinyl, the Magic of Chad Juros and the Masonic Lodges of the 23rd District.  Additional local sponsors will be announced at the event.

The Arc of Atlantic County is a private non-profit organization that has been making a difference in the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families since its founding in 1961. Through direct services, advocacy, education and prevention activities, The Arc works in partnership with individuals and their families to make choices possible about how and where they live, learn, work and play.
